JOHANNESBURG – Several civic organisations gathered outside South African Revenue Service (SARS) headquarters in Tshwane and demonstrated for whistleblowers’ safety.

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse, Defend our Democracy and the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation form part of the group that gathered outside SARS on Thursday.

The demonstrations were sparked by the recent assassination attempt on advocate Coreth Naude – who was shot several times by unknown gunmen outside an uMhlanga hotel – a few weeks ago.

The three organisations are calling for the protection of whistleblowers and raising awareness of the fatal consequences of speaking out.

Naude’s attempted murder follows the double murder of court-appointed curator Cloete Murray and his son, Thomas.

At the time, Murray was reportedly working with Naude on the tax inquiry into businesswoman Shawn Mkhize’s empire.

Murray was also the liquidator for Bosasa, and for firms linked to the Guptas.

“I am very positive today with the efforts that were done by SARS and civil organisations and individuals,” said the widow Thomas Murray, Monet.
